Sense of place is a project for staffs uni level 4 semester 2: The brief was to design a multi-page book that communicates an aspect of a particular location incorporating both type and image as a means to inform and engage the audience.

Below is my finished book
I chose Burslem as my location and my focus was the Wedgwood institute.
I used wedgwood blue as the colour for my book and made laser etched plates to produce 12 embossed images to replicate the 12 friezes on the facade of the building-one for each month, the text in my book is about buildings deteriorating as the building is currently undergoing urgent restoration,I used japanese stab stitch to echo details of the tile work on the building and french folds to reveal patterns found on the building in tiles and brickwork-i also made these patterns in wedgwood blue to create unity and flow within the book and link to wedgwood throughout.
The patterns i created from looking at details on the building to be used inside the french folds.
My finished embossed images representing each month of the year, I decided on embossing the images as it showed the 3d carved aspect of the friezes as shown in the carved terracotta work on the building.
This is my finished book.
This is some of the initial research i carried out on the burslem area before i had decided on my focus.
Focusing more research on the wedgwood institute.
Images of the friezes i used as my focus.
Research into wedgwood and the wedgwood blue colour.
Research into format and binding ideas.
